Christmas food

This year I am going to spend Christmas with my parents, so I had an early Christmas meal with in-laws before I leave the country. They prepared some of the traditional Finnish food. As the main hero, there was the Christmas ham. My spouse was very disappointed that in-laws remembered about my dislike for mustard. Usually they bake the ham slathered in mustard, but because this was meant to be shared with me, a different recipe was used. The ham was prepared for many hours using a traditional firewood oven.

A second main character was the Karelian hot pot, the one that @DoctorEldritch linked. Usually in-laws prepare it with moose instead of beef, but I have some digestion issues with game meat. So for my sake again, they made it with beef this time.

There was a couple of casserole boxes. Carrot with rice and potato with syrup, I don't really like the latter. The taste doesn't sit right with me. Another traditional casserole for Christmas is with rutabaga, but nobody in my family eats that one. Other foods are what the peasants could find back in the days: rye bread, red beets, smoked fish.

A personal touch that in-laws added was a potful of bigos. They both really like it and it is actually often served on the Christmas day in Poland.
@GoLLuM13 Thanks for the history lesson!

@GoLLuM13 Awh, I am sorry for that! Shall I describe some Polish food as an apology? 😅

@Saka I don't know Polish food, but if there is meat like this, it will do the same effect 🤣

@GoLLuM13 There is some meat! Just different kind of stuff. Birds are more traditional for Poland.

@Saka if we're talking chicken and turkey, I like those 👀

@Saka The ham looks nice! What did your in-laws use instead of mustard? I know honey can be good.

And about potatoes, what syrup is used with them? Maybe if you are not against potatoes as such, changing the syrup will make them more inviting for you? But if you do not like potatoes in general, then that would not help.

What about dessert, any interesting sweets?

But a very impressive dish selection and it's not even Christmas yet. You'll get to do this again with Polish dishes next?

I have a special bird for you, a wood pigeon:

They taste quite pleasant, but the curious thing about them is that they are so small that the whole bird fits on the plate, like in the photo. So with a bit of imagination you can pretend that you got a turkey all to yourself 😉

@DoctorEldritch I guess it's a plain glucose syrup. I am also not a huge fan of potatoes, so that doesn't help.

I didn't have any desserts this time, as it was just a small meant to be a substitute to spending the Eve with in-laws. So the sweets will have to wait until I go to Poland.

@Saka To be fair, plain glucose syrup does not sound appetizing. You could try golden maple syrup instead, that is a more classic way to go, and it brings out the notes better, I think. And choosing the right potatoes is important, not all of them are equally good and delicious baked. Maybe you would like sweet potatoes better? Add some pecan glaze and you got yourself one of these:

Too bad for the sweets. I'd love a couple dozen Korvapuusts right about now...
