@ZaidH I'd say there is a big enough gap between Rise of Shogun and Project Century, during that period changes were rather swift indeed. Then again, I can't play RoS until it releases on PC.

As for the speculations, I am not sure. Kabukicho, the real district that Kamurocho is based on, did not exist in the 1900s at all, it only really began after WW2. They could imagine what it could be like at the time if it was built, but it would not be historically accurate. If it were up to me, I'd use a district that was already established at the time as a model, like Yoshiwara or something.

To be fair, many games lost the sense of what open-world should really be like, they often fill it with grind or boring repetitive task. I can forgive it if it is atmospheric and beautiful like RDR2 was, but that does not happen often these days. Mafia games don't need that for sure even if they are beautiful, though.

Nah, not the dungeon. They have something else planned for him:

@DoctorEldritch Oh wow I had no idea that the gap was that big. I wish Japanese history had been part of our History lessons.

That’s really interesting! Some people pointed out that one of the buildings looked like the Shangri-La building, but your reasoning is sound. Also, I highly doubt our protag, “John Century” is the OG Tojo like some are speculating 😅

Ubisoft gave your comment a thumbs down.

LMFAO 😂 Happy that Doug is set for life now.

@ZaidH, I want to say the biggest difference is the electrification. It first began just before Project Century takes place. And electrification changed the world very rapidly.

While it is plausible for the building to be around for so long, it is somewhat unlikely, even for Shangri-La. It is not impossible, but it would be a national landmark if it did 😅

A connection to Tojo is... I am not sure, I have not played Judgement yet, so I am not sure about level of "connection" that they have between games set in the same universe. Do Judgement and Yakuza games have any connection points, like characters that you can meet in both or NPCs in one mentioning events from the other? If so, then some nod towards the Tojo Clan may be possible. Will need to look out for someone named Makoto then 😉

I'd say it only proves my point. They were pioneers in what was a new way to build open worlds, but what was pioneering and innovative 20 years ago is repetitive stagnation by modern standards.

That's true, though it remains to be seen how big of a role Geralt may actually play in that game.

@DoctorEldritch I'd also assume that was around the time Japan opened up to Western culture, which explains the musical and clothing influences in the trailer.

Yeah, I’m just as clueless about the connectivity between the RGG games. Surprisingly, Persona 5 had some nods to the Yakuza series 😄

So true! I really hope Ubisoft bounces back. They clearly have insanely talented devs who deserve so much better!!

@ZaidH You're right, indeed, the Meiji period technically ended in 1912, that's when Japan started to be Westernised, and the game takes place in the early Taisho era then, marked by many cultural and technological changes there further adopting Western culture. A very fruitful period to set a game in for sure.

Well, they are both SEGA family, so they may encourage nods towards their different projects in games like that.

Actually, the rumour has it that about half of AC Shadows developers have no experience in making games (I saw that news popping up here and there for some time, but it could be false). And that new Captain Laserhawk: the G.A.M.E. (based on that series from last year) may have had very little marketing and may not be doing all that well either...

@DoctorEldritch Reading this is making me even more excited for the game 😁 Also, I just realized, another trailer shown during TGA, Mafia: The Old Country, seems to be set around a similar time frame, right? Maybe both games could give each other a nod online, like how Doom Eternal and Animal Crossing did 😄

Ooof, that’s worrying if true. Hopefully, there are some seasoned devs around to guide the newer ones. Fingers crossed for ambitious and creative talent to emerge from this fresh pool 🙏 I’m hearing about Laserhawk for the very first time, and that’s coming from someone who spends more time reading about games than actually playing them. Definitely agree with you about the marketing!

@ZaidH It would be cool if they found an organic way to easter egg each other, that's true. Technically, liner travel at that time was fast enough so that characters travelling between two countries is not improbable, however unlikely. Both gamers are open RPGs, both set during the same time and have roughly similar vibe settings, so the idea of a "cameo" practically floats in the air. Will be interesting to see if they manage to work it in.

I would think there are seasoned ones there too, new ones reportedly account for half the team. Will be interesting to see how it all turns out, though AC hasn't been in my top or even second-tier choices for a while now. And yeah, Ubisoft has interesting marketing strategies sometimes. They ma be doing a lot for the big franchises, but smaller games often fly under my radar. For example, have you heard about Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles?

@DoctorEldritch Haha, it would be so fun to see an RGG character in a Mafia setting 😂 The whole Mafia plot would unravel instantly if you let a lunatic like Majima loose in it! Pretty sure Project Century will bring some of that madness too.

Oh bruh, that’s the most generic-looking trailer I’ve ever seen. How did Ubisoft go from Rayman and Valiant Hearts to this? 😭

@ZaidH That is actually a bit of a challenge there, Yakuza setting is whacky, but the Mafia is dead serious (no pun intended), and though it may make for funny situations if they collide in a crossover, it can be tricky to maintain balance if that collab is more than a nod. They may be better off doing what Doom Eternal and Animal Crossing did like you said.

Well... I dunno. There's been a lot of YT videos where some people who know the gaming industry and many people who don't try to explain it. I say, bring back Sam Fisher and everything will be fine 😊

@DoctorEldritch Oh yeah, both games are on completely different ends of the spectrum 😅 I’m actually playing Mafia 1 remake right now and plan to jump into LAD after that. Really looking forward to the tonal shift!

bring back Sam Fisher and everything will be fine
    *rubs hand*
So, uh, about the mobile game we’re working on—put Sam Fisher in it as a cameo. That’ll print us so much money!
