Based on the April 2023 Steam Monthly Hardware Survey, we can deduce the following typical build :

    OS : Windows 10 64 bit
    RAM : 16 GB
    CPU : 6 Cores between 2.3 and 2.69 Ghz
GPU : nVidia GTX 1650 with 8 GB of VRAM
    Display : 1920 x 1080
Free Disk Space : between 100 and 249 GB
Total Disk Space : more than 1 TB
VR Headset : Oculus Quest 2

    And for those who would be in multiscreen : 3840 x 1080 or 2 screens of 1920 x 1080

However, we also notice a loss of speed for Windows 10 x64 with -12.74% and a gain of 10.98% for Windows 11 despite everything, there is still a fairly large gap, Windows 10 x64 is at 61.2% while Windows 11 is at 33.39% .
As for the GPUs it's very tight while the GTX 1650 is at 5.98% the GTX 1060 which is second is at 4.84% and the 3rd is the RTX 3060 with 4.51%, and it is only at the 13th place that we can see an AMD GPU (an iGPU to be exact).

Of course, this survey is done on a voluntary basis, which means that a person can refuse to take part.

PS: I have issues to upload an image so I put the link to the survey : Steam Hardware & Software Survey (steampowered.com)

@GoLLuM13 Figures are interesting to dive deep into, but if we were to sum it up as practical advice, then what would it be? Stick to Windows 10 for now?

@DoctorEldritch Good timing I was writing an article about Windows client roadmap 😀

As a Windows 11 user and as someone who installed it in every possible PC of family and friends, no one complained about it, and there were nothing "severe" like we could see on so many articles, I don't say everything is perfect, nothing is, whether with W10 or W11, but my preference goes to W11 so far especially after what I wrote on the article 👀

But to "summarize", I'll say this, Both are good, and if someone wants to try Windows 11, the upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 is free, and we have 10 days to do a rollback in case we don't like it. Each and every one has its preferences, after all 😊

    - - - Updated - - -

I forgot to mention the 3 "issues" I had so far with Windows 11
    1. The first one is specific to the French version (probably only the fr-FR not fr-CA) I tried the en-US and it wasn't there, it's just a bug when I sort files in a certain way it refuses to do it, and only this way.
    2. The second one is a little lag when you click on the volume button for the first time in a session, I don't have it anymore since I did a fresh install
    3. It's more like a joke, but many bugs concern AMD users 🤣 (which I obviously am)

@GoLLuM13 On one of my PCs that I had custom-made 5 years ago, I cannot replace Windows 10 with the next version, it says that some hardware is not compatible, but I imagine it is an issue for custom builds.

But going back to the issue of bad porting that @Saka summarised and your comment about the gap between PCs and consoles, would switching from 10 to 11 help to close the gap, or is it mostly a hardware issue to the extent where there would be minimal difference in game performance?

@DoctorEldritch I have older PCs with Windows 11 (there is a trick/tool called Rufus to install it everywhere 👀)

Don't fall in their trap, Star Wars performed almost similarly on W10 and W11 and even slightly better on W10 according to some tests and the DirectStorage that I mentioned on the other topic is compatible with both, it's allegedly better on W11 (according to Microsoft 😜), but there isn't enough compatible games to really do a comparison. Don't think too much about this, it's a matter of optimization before anything else, especially when a 4090 struggle to let you play in a decent condition 👀

Maybe not worth it yet. And I have Windows 11 on another PC, too. Still can't get used to the menu being on the bottom Apple-style and not on the side, though.

Microsoft seems crafty these days, also with that "end of support for previous versions of Windows" you mentioned before. I wonder why are they driving people to upgrade so much...

@DoctorEldritch you can easily change it to the side like it was before right-click on the task bar -> task bar settings -> on the bottom you'll have an option task bar behavior click on it -> first option is about task bar position select left (like you probably know I have Windows in French so you might find different names with the same meaning)

It's totally understandable from Microsoft, they're working on W12, so they need more hands on this deck instead of W10's deck

@GoLLuM13 I watched a tutorial on how to do it, but it is the fact that they put it there by default in the first place that confuses me. It is very Apple feature, traditionally, I wonder why they thought it would work better than the usual design they had from the start.

It could be just my opinion, but Microsoft could wait a bit more between Windows versions. We could have done without some of them, like Vista. Though I understand that releasing them is a part of the whole trial-and-error process, but still. From what I can see, people are not in favor, generally, to have to upgrade their systems that often. Or maybe it's just me.

@DoctorEldritch Vista was a really good OS but on one condition : "having the right machine to make it work", it's not that different from Windows 7 and many of the new features that came with Vista were on Windows 7 and are still used on Windows 11. And even some tests showed that Vista SP2 was faster than Windows 7 SP1 (both released around the same time) but when someone has already an idea about something, it's hard to change it 😜 The only bad OS and by bad I mean industry catastrophe it was Windows M.E. (Millenium Edition)

Now back to Windows 11 🤣 at first I was confused with the centered positioning too 😅 but I tried to center it eventually (even if it's not really centered, but it's another debate for another day 🤣) now I'm kinda used to it, and if the "sketches" / "concept" I've seen are to be believed, there will be a bigger change in Windows 12 it will be more "à la macOS" 👀 they're thinking tablets and touch screens

@GoLLuM13 It's not that I am dead set on my ways of that Vista is bad, it is more that I did not like the experience I had with it as a user as much. That, and while "Vista" may mean something like "view" in Spanish, but in the language of the country I am from, "Vista" actually means "chicken". There may have been more than a healthy number of puns about it when this version came out. So I may be prejudiced against that Windows version, too. 🐔

As for "à la macOS", seems odd to me. They are trading the uniqueness of their design for utility, which is understandable, but maybe could be seen as a weakness, like admitting that Mac had a better design from the start after all?
