@DoctorEldritch Ah man, I hope to see the Dawn soon 🙏

Public libraries do exist, but they're mostly academia-focused. Tons of valuable educational material, but fiction books are a rarity 😅 I want my own library card too and wanna wheel all those books home damnit 😭

My journey won’t be that long, lols. I just want to read the works of British authors who mastered their respective genres. So far it’s Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle for mystery, Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams for comedy, George Orwell for the terrifying future category, and Adrian Tchaikovsky for sci-fi.

Very tough indeed. Web dev roles or anything adjacent to it.

    @ZaidH One can hope 😊

Really? I have both academia and public in a more leisure sense libraries around. I guess it may vary from place to place. And I do most of my reading online or through the app these days, anyway...

You have much covered with that spread, but there are pillars of English literature still. Romance of Jane Austen, as I mentioned, or Jerome K. Jerome for a different kind of comedy, not forgetting Shakespeare as the monolith of plays, or Dickens for classics. Still, you should be able to enjoy the references even with just your list.

Ah, I see. I read that competition is fierce in that sector at the moment. Hope your hunt goes well!

@DoctorEldritch Yep, sadly that's the case here. Though there are some trendy cafes around that have fiction books and manga, you’ve got to buy expensive coffee or food to read them 😆 Might as well buy the book at that point.

THANK YOU for mentioning Jerome K. Jerome!!! I actually wanted to bookmark Three Men in a Boat before but forgot, so, many thanks for reminding me of it. I’ll be reading it soon. Also, I'm not really into the romance genre, but everyone and their mother has recommended Pride and Prejudice. If you’ve read it, do you think it’s a good read for someone who doesn't usually like romance?

Thank you, and yeah, it's a fierce field 😅 Web dev is among the countless professions lined up infront of a firing squad, staring down the barrel of AI-powered guns wielded by out-of-touch execs 😆

I find it interesting how 3 out of 4 books on this list have series adaptations now. How do you like those?

@ZaidH Ah well, there are always the apps. They do not have the "feel" of a real book, of course, but I am willing to trade that for the ability to read anywhere 😅

Jerome K. Jerome is a classic, do not miss Three Men in a Boat, it's great fun. Here is a cooking recipe from that book to get you started 😉

As for Pride and Prejudice, I cannot say, I read it in school when it was not a personal choice, but part of the curriculum, same as with Romeo and Juliet or War and Peace. Romance is not really my genre either, so in this case, I'd say, watch a movie and see if you'd like to read a book. Spoiler alert!

If you're after something modern, rumour has it that Netflix is working on its own adaptation now, which will star Olivia Colman and Jack Lowden, among others.

That may be the unfortunate circumstances, but then again, web developers will hypothetically be our first line of defence if AI goes rogue. Unless it turns us all into organic batteries or starts sending naked men into the past to terminate teenagers 😅

@DoctorEldritch Hope the dog got to eat the Irish stew for his great contribution of protein 😂😂😂 Good stuff, I can't wait to read it!

Erm, I think I'll put Pride and Prejudice deep down on my reading list then 😅 I think the Netflix adaptation you're talking about might be the better option here.

Lmao, seeing how much energy these AI data centers require, that organic battery route actually seems plausible. Gasp maybe we ARE in a simulation right now, and that's why we keep seeing our gaming conversations become realities. Will be on the lookout for a bald guy with sunglasses 🫥

@AhmeddM Ayeeee, so happy to see a fellow Mistborn fan here 😁 Welcome, welcome! Are you a fan of Brandon Sanderson's other books, or do you just follow the Mistborn series?

@ZaidH I won't call myself a fan, but I did read another book of his called "Tress of the Emerald Sea". He is really a good writer, and I wish I have enough time to read all of his books.
