@Saka Ah, yes, thank you! I was talking about Norton Commander, I forgot that it was called that. As I only ever used it on a DOS system, they blurred for me, and I was inaccurate. Whoopsie! 😝

But yeah, I wonder how many people are here who used it and remember it. I ran my first games on it, The Lost Vikings and Disney's Duck Tales - The Quest for Gold. Did you run any games when you were using it?

@DoctorEldritch I was too young to play games on my own. I did play with my sister though. So there was definitely something, but the names are lost to me.

There is a spiritual successor to Norton Commander, called Total Commander. I know people using it to this day rather than the Windows file explorer.

@Saka It is interesting how these days the typical desktop format with icons on a screen is a majorly accepted format of MO. It is nice to see that some people prefer other alternatives. Do those who use Total Commander do so instead or in addition to the desktop format?

There is a sense in desktop format, as it is convenient, but at the same time, is it a pinnacle of how interacting with your files on a PC can be like? This reminds me of that comedy bit from Community where they imagined what it may look like to work with your files in a virtual reality era:

@DoctorEldritch It's a Windows application, so you just have it in a window. At some point of time it was a better way of copying large amounts of files, particularly because Windows file manager was slow at copying operations. I don't know if that changed since then, because with SSDs and clouds these things matter a lot less. Wouldn't be surprised if Windows is still as inefficient though. Efficiency was never its strength.😂

If that were the core principle, then Apple PCs would be spheric and edible 😉
