@DracoTarot I don't think they are making anything new, at least, I have not heard about it. They found two decently working formulas with Tropico and Dungeon, and they just keep making more of the same now. I think Tropico 7 is next. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, sticking to what works.

@DoctorEldritch As long as hey keep to the formula then everything will work out well. Changing too much may not be a good thing.

@DracoTarot Well, in their case, Tropico was always about a political satire, so every new part made fun of what was happening in the world at the time. Tropico 6 made fun of the space race and pandemic, for example. My guess is that Tropico 7 will keep the same mechanics but try to make fun of new current events, whatever they will focus on.

Dungeon, on the other hand, is a tribute to the cult classic Dungeon Master, and they are tweaking with the formula to make it as close to that as possible while still adhering to modern game tastes.

So both are reasonably safe options, and developers also give the impression that they know, most of the time, what and how to change to make the game better and not worse. Granted, it is not that hard in these two examples, but still, this is a trait more developers would benefit from.

@DoctorEldritch I often wonder with everything going on in the world if developers are being cautious about the content they release. It may be easier to develop games on the same principles as before but because of all the red tape these days developers overthink things before going overboard even if it's sattire.

I've noticed comedians who stepped over the line about certain topics like politics and used sattire as a cover suddenly stopped doing it.

New laws and regulations may hinder future projects which worked and they would have to take another route.

People these days are so serious about everything and have the tendency to follow the cancel culture route.

@DracoTarot Depends on what the satire is about and in what format, I'd say. Tropico is more bout general world trends and issues than specific countries or politics, they touch lightly on specifics but make fun of the general a lot. But there are also games that target specific politics or people. I do not enjoy them, though, I'd rather play games that either have nothing to do with those themes or touch them lightly, like Tropico does. I'd say they found the right balance.

@DoctorEldritch If the balance is kept and they do not overstep boundaries I guess it would work out for them. 🙂
