@DracoTarot That is good to know, they sound like something I'd rather switch to, I only ever had external drives, and that's it. How about pricing, are servers more of an investment?

@DoctorEldritch Servers are very expensive even second hand. The best will be to buy a server cabinet and add drives as you need them instead of buying a whole server with all the drives.

I had a server cabinet once which was able to handle around 20 drives.

In the long run it's an investment.

@DracoTarot That sounds useful, but up to a point. If you only do gaming, you probably do not need that much space. What would you use it for? Even if you play multiple games at once, it is usually better not to spread yourself too thin. At my worst, I had about 10 games installed a the same time, but I try to keep it in 1-5 area normally. 20 drivers would be multiple TBs, you may end up with more space than you know what to do with.

@DoctorEldritch It all depends if you're a collector. I know people who made backups of all their digital copies and it's thousands of game's including the downloaded ones. They also use the servers to host their own multiplayer games and store other data in the drives.

@DracoTarot I guess. Though for me, I never saw games as something that has collectable value if they are digital copies. I know there are people who collect games and films and store them and rewatch (or replay) them regularly, but for me, games could never be interesting again after I played them once (except for rougelikes that are designed for repeatability. You know the story, you know the mechanics, why spend time on old when there is so much new coming out all the time?

@DoctorEldritch I guess most of the veteran hardcore gamers had no choice to buy all those digital copies over the years and haven't given them away and stored most of them thinking the digital copies will be worth something in the future.

Now in the new technological with all the storage available you can imagine and servers for backups they are able to store and then sell off the digital versions.

My collection mostly consist of music, series and movies. I recently started collecting games.

@DracoTarot Maybe, I am not sure. I think I used some of my old CDs as tree decorations to scare the crows away, though. I mismanaged my investments. But on the plus side, my veggie harvests are plentiful 😅

I'll need to check if there is a market for it. There is one for comic books or vinyl records, but not sure about old CDs.

I do not keep series or films, I mostly watch them online and move on. Same for the games, really: now we have those EGS and Steam libraries, it eases the strain on storage. But I can see the appeal of it if your connection is not that good, it really helps to have a copy in oyour wn storage to play in cases like that.

@DoctorEldritch I won't use original CD's of DVD's to scare of birds in the garden. I'm cautious not to destroy maybe a potential gem in my collection. Imagine a valuable CD hanging in a garden being destroyed by the elements.

I'd rather hang a few writable s outside or fake one's to deter those crows. 😆

All my veggies are gone. I need to start planting soon.

We have people here collecting compact disks and vinyls. It seems to have become a trend.

My issue is I do not have uncapped internet. Still waiting for a fiber installation and the LTE connections are really bad these days. Downloading is my only option for now until I'm settled then I'm gonna stream.

@DracoTarot We don't need to imagine that, history provides examples of even the most bizarre scenarios. In this particular case, I am reminded of Vincent van Gogh's Portrait of Doctor Rey.

I am quite sure I do not have anything quite as valuable in my collection, so I repurposed it to scare crows with no reservations.

Did you harvest them all, or did the crows get them?

Ah, well, then maybe you'll be in luck and find a collector. And then all those precious CDs will end up in a museum somewhere 😉

Broadband availability is an issue these days, indeed. My parents recently got fibre installed, they are joking now that fibre got to them faster than asphalt. Which is true, ours is the only street without it in our district. Crazy times. Do you have an asphalt cover?

@DoctorEldritch I made a mistake a few years back I regret until this day. I had a collection of LOBO comic's in immaculate condition and gave them away. I heard the guy who got them sold the whole collection for a nice sum of money. I won't make that mistake again.

I hold on to things and do my homework first before letting items go. I do have 3 CDs worth something and they are signed by the bands. No way I am letting go of them or use them as bird repellants. 😂

We do have a asplat cover and when they started rolling out the fiber they destroyed most of the sidewalks and never fixed them after laying the cables. The fiber points doesn't work and most of the fibre pipes fill with water most of the time. In my area it was one of those illegal tenders scenarios. Pocket the cash and take a dash.

I'm waiting for Starlink to arrive but because of how things are going and the tensions here and certain dumb laws, I don't think it's going to happen soon.
