Do you play as male or female characters in RPGs?

    Hello Legion Gamers!

We're almost in the middle of the month of Females in Gaming, and here is a question: when games give you the option to choose whether to play as male or female, which is your default go-to option?

The genre that most often allows you to do it is probably RPG. Some, like Tomb Raider and Uncharted or Spider-Man, have specific characters (Lara, Nate and Peter in this case) connected to those games and give you no choice but to roleplay as them, so are relatively simple.

But then there are games that let you choose the gender. Cyberpunk 2077, Fallout, Mass Effect and Dragon Age, all allow one to select gender when creating a character, and while sometimes that choice has some effect on the story, it is more often than not minimal, so selecting gender may be a feature for a deeper immersion or even purely aesthetical.

Personally, given a choice, I go for male characters myself as it helps the roleplaying factor for me. I even played Assassin's Creed Odyssey as Alexios despite being advised to choose Kassandra as a better voice actor.

But I wonder if my approach is a popular one or not. Which gender do you pick in games when given a choice?

@DoctorEldritch It doesn't bother me if a character is male or female even if the game has a specific storyline. The most important to me is the skillset of a character. Sometimes if a game has a few characters to choose from I'll start with the first one on the list and work through them one at a time.

@DracoTarot What about when you need to design a character yourself and gender has no effect on the skillset? Like when creating a character in Skyrim.
