    Hello Legion Gamers!

Today is Monday the 25th of September, the start of the last week of the Month of Food. And incidentally, this day is also Cooking Day!

We already started a thread about coking and video games, so this time thought it was time to talk about cooking for people who play games, us gamers. The idea came to me when I remembered a bit from the French Dispatch movie describing Gastronomie Gendarmique.

This is a fictional cuisine, of course, but it got me thinking that the fundamentals there would apply to the food made with gamers in mind. Paraphrasing the bit from the movie, it could be something like this:

“Gamer cooking” began with the Sony free food stand at Gamescom 2009 in Cologne, but has evolved and codified into something refined, intensely nourishing, and, if executed properly, marvellously flavorful.

    Fundamentals:

    1. Highly compact. (not to take space on a PC table or coffee table in front of the TV).
    2. Rich in protein. (obviously. Gaming takes a lot of energy).
    3. Eaten with the non-dominant hand only, the other being reserved for mouse and controller.
    4. Most dishes are served pre-cut. Nothing crunchy. Quiet food. (So as not to miss someone sneaking and crunchy food is bad in headphones).
    5. Sauces are dehydrated and ground to a powder to avoid spillage and the risk of messing up the keyboard.
Maybe you can think of any other qualities that food needs to have if it is cooked with the gamer community in mind? I want to say "nothing oily or greasy" so as not to dirty the keyboard or controller after using hand to grab it.

And if not, do you have a favourite gaming snack that you like to munch on during a gaming session?

I hate to get my keyboard or mouse dirty; plus it'd be quite unhygienic to touch the peripherals and then food that I put in my mouth. Most of the time I eat snacks while gaming, I actually do so during small breaks, and then wash my hands afterwards. Sometimes I would eat a bit of chocolate or some bars, as this can be done without touching the food, only the packaging.

Most of the time I only have drinks on my desk. If I eat at the desk, it's usually when I am watching something or doing browsing with one hand on the keyboard, and the other in the food.

@Saka If I need to eat actual cooked food while gaming, then I usually use a fork, but that rarely happens, most of the time it's "grab snacks", but nothing that can create a mess, no chips or anything like that. And I am not against touching the food but that mostly applies to fruit. For example, I can munch on cherries or plums while gaming with no reservations.

@DoctorEldritch I have some sensory issues, so getting my fingers even slightly sticky is a big no no. I can eat fruit when in front of the computer, but then I don't do it with the same hand that I use to browse/type; usually it would be eating with the left hand and using the computer with the right. And afterwards I would go wash the left hand so that I could return to normal usage.

@Saka I guess it may then depend on the fruit? I do not eat anything mushy or sticky like watermelons, but fruit such as apple, plum or cherry are no problem. And I do not wash my hands afterwards, but I have a pack of wet napkins on the table for that.

@DoctorEldritch I completely stay away from food while working on my PC or gaming. I like to keep things neat and tidy. One small crumb on my keyboard gets on my nerves.

I don't allow anybody near my equipment while eating. 😂

@DracoTarot Admirable, I do not have the willpower to stay away from food even when gaming. But I do not eat anything that would leave crumbs. Mostly fruits or candy.
