@Saka I just love this laptop. If this has the carbon case it would of been the best laptop imo, but even without it, it's gotta be atleast top 5. I need to get my hands on a laptop like this

@Haffejeeeee A bit late to reply, but the carbon case is currently only in the halo product that was just announced, the Legion 9i.

The LOQ series has the chassis fully made of PC-ABS. You can find relevant information in the product specifications on the official product website.

The choice of the material has both pros and cons, as it is with all things in the world. It makes the laptop more lightweight, so it is easier to carry and more resistant to micro dents compared to aluminium from previous Legion products (I cannot speak of the latest models, as I have not seen them). On the other hand, the material does not offer the same flexibility as metal, so it has some consequences when it comes to the design of the locking mechanisms in hinges or attachment of the bottom lid of the case.

@Saka I never thought of it that way before🤔🤔

Opens my eyes a bit more into the laptops details, do you think the carbon will effect the laptops practicality in any way? The concept of carbon on anything other than a vehicle is a bit new to me so I'm still trying to figure out and analyze this type of design move,

@Haffejeeeee Carbon fibre is expensive compared to aluminium or plastic. I do not expect this to become a mainstream solution, but rather a feature of premium-class products. It would not make sense to make the chassis a significant portion of the laptop's price tag in a midrank product.

Carbon fibre offers very high strength to weight ratio. It would allow for a slim chassis that weight much less than the alternatives and does not flex. It also does not have the heat conductivity aluminium does, which means that heat inside the laptop would not be as noticeable on the outside. On the other hand, this also means less dissipation. I understood from Sergei's AMA that they redesigned the entire heat dissipation system with this in mind as well for the 9i.

The carbon fibre would be much more rigid than a comparable layer of plastic or aluminium. I can only guess without seeing the laptop, but it likely has a slimmer profile than you would expect from a desktop-replacement class of device and does not flex despite it's improved portability. The frosted surface also looks very stylish and unique. It would be also quite scratch and dent resistant, so negating the weak points of aluminium and plastic in this regard.

On the other hand, there can be potential radio frequency interferences with carbon, reducing the wireless signal received by laptop. I am sure the engineers would do design changes to eliminate that issue, by using stronger antenna, but it's something to be kept in mind at design level, and affecting the popularity of the solution.

@Saka Yea true its just going to be expensive to put carbon on everything.
In this case maybe it was for the best because that laptop is a UNIT. I'm just happy they didn't cut corners with it and made it 'worth the price'.

Hopefully if I get a chance to collab with Lenovo or eventually upgrade my laptop I'll be able to test the carbon one, slim 7i and LOQ 16 hands on.

I have the i3 version of the b50-70 and I've been eyes those 3 laptops as potential upgrades. If you're up for it, I wouldn't mind hearing your feedback on those laptops (if you have videos on it lemmy know, I'll watch them instead of giving you the trouble of repeating yourself lol)

@Haffejeeeee The LOQ16 is almost the same as LOQ15, the difference is the 16:10 screen rather than 16:9. I posted the LOQ15 review in here. As for other laptops, I was on a press event in the winter that showed the current generation non-slim laptops, but they were only displayed on the shelf. No actual trying out unfortunately. I wrote about the presentation, but nowadays those models are out, so there would be more information easily available on the internet.

Unfortunately, the Legion 9i is something that is completely out of my reach, I am just a modest Masters student with quite a bit of medical bills to pay. There were some nice answers about it in the AMA thread, but that's all I know.
