What is your spirit game?

    Hello Legion Gamers!

Last week was Black Cat Appreciation Day, and we talked about what familiars we'd choose if we could (since the black cat is one of the classic choices). And @DracoTarot raised a curious point that familiars and spirit animals are sometimes perceived synonymously.

This got me thinking about other such things that are connected to one's personality. There are drinking games like this where people tell each other things like "If you were a car, you'd be a jeep because you like outdoors" or "If you were a cookie, you'd be a triple chocolate chip because you're so sweet"

So I thought it could be interesting to ask: If you were a video game, what video game do you think you'd be and why? Not really a deep spiritual animal meaning with this one, just for fun?

@DoctorEldritch If I were a video game, I'd be Diablo. The reason is I find myself in a constant battle between good and evil. I need to find a balance between light and dark. So far I'm surviving and I'm steadfast in my quest even if I lose my willpower once in a while. I do have magic within me to conquer and still learning how to put forth my full potential to be victorious in my quest.

@DracoTarot You do seem to have a soft spot for Diablo, getting a Tarot card version of it and everything, so no surprise there. 😉 Though I have not played it, so probably do not fully appreciate all levels of it. Any particular game of the series that you feel closest to?

@DoctorEldritch I definitely do have a soft spot for Diablo. It's a game I'm good at and I really enjoy the storyline and mechanics of the game.

Diablo 2 will always be my favourite in the series. The remastered version is good. Diablo 3 was a bit of a letdown and Diablo 4 is also great but still a little buggy.

@DracoTarot I remember reading somewhere that originally Diablo was meant to be turn-based, but in the final testing, the devs decided that it was slowing down the dynamic too much. So before the release, they changed the mechanic. Back then, it took them but a few hours to edit the code. I wonder how long such a change would need today...

I'm afraid I know nothing of the story, though.

I want to say, give Diablo 4 a bit of time. Many modern games come out with some bugs and get all better in a year or so. And the next season is coming, hopefully with some patches included.

@DoctorEldritch I'm glad they decided not to make Diablo turn-based. I think Diablo wouldn't have been a huge success. The developers would take a long time to code the game if they decided to make it turn-based especially Diablo 4.

Diablo 4 has a few online issues. Rubberbanding is one of those. If Diablo 4 had an offline option, it would run much better.

@DracoTarot Hard to imagine that sometimes changes that later proved game-changing were sometimes made on the spot and so fast. Modern devs can't really do it no more, I think...

Oh, Diablo 4 has no offline option at all? Is it kind of like Fallout 76 in that sense?

@DoctorEldritch Can you play Diablo 4 offline? Unfortunately no,you can't play Diablo 4 without an internet connection, meaning those looking to take down monsters on the go, will be disappointed. The game needs access to Battle.net at all times to save your character and progress.

Developers really need to take offline mode into consideration especially if a game has a story mode. The excuse is the character needs to be saved online. WHY? Older games had an outsave function and your character is automatically saved into a folder on your computer.

It was a real kick in the you know what when Diablo 3 was released on Console. Diablo 3 is playable offline on PS and XBOX. On a PC, a constant internet connection is needed.

@DracoTarot Maybe they will add it in one of the last updates before wrapping the game up? I remember Shadow of War had those microtransactions and needed an internet connection (but I think you could play it offline), but then one of the last updates made many changes like removing those microtransactions and grind levels in the epilogue that were the main reason for them and generally made the game more offline-friendly, since devs stopped with main online support anyway. Maybe Diablo 4 would be the same, but considering how long the devs want it to live, I can't say when it's gonna happen, if ever.

Maybe there is some inner reasoning behind needing the internet connection all the time, I don't know.

Diablo 4 follows a live service model, meaning it's designed to constantly receive updates and patches, with new seasons and content to keep players engaged. With this in mind, it's highly unlikely that an offline mode will be added in the future. The live service model requires players to be connected to the game's servers (i.e., the internet) to access the latest content and updates.

Additionally, implementing an offline mode would require significant changes to the game's infrastructure and potentially compromise security. While it's understandable that some players may prefer an offline mode, it's important to remember that Diablo 4 was designed to be a connected experience. And that's everything we know about an offline mode in Diablo 4.
