    Hello Legion Gamers!

The Sports Month in the Legion Community is in swing. We started with a Crossword Puzzle (which is still mostly unsolved. Maybe I made it a bit too hard... 😅), and talked about pools (that are not really sports per see, but it is not possible to do some sports without them).

And next week, the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup will start, so we look forward to more discussions. But in anticipation of that and while we wait, I want to ask: will you watch the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup and do you watch sports at all?

To be honest, I am not really into watching sports, have never been a football or any other sports fan and really would rather prefer playing games than watching sports. But there is one sport that I do enjoy watching, it is ice skating.

I like how it is it is a combination of physical prowess and technique with theatrical elements, which makes this the most creative and artistic (mainstream) sport for me, and I value the artistic side of things. Not to mention it is one of the few sports that involve music, which is always a plus in my book. @DracoTarot and @galadrielmt, there are even some performances that use heavy metal, like this:

So this is my "spectacle sports" of choice. What about you, enjoy watching any sports?
    ?🎾?⚽?🎿?🥊?🏀🏃?🏊?

@DoctorEldritch When I watch a bit of sports cricket and rugby would be my favourites. I also like watching UFC main events and when it's time for the Olympics I would watch most of the events.

I have noticed in some sports metal would be a music choice. UFC and other fighting sports like boxing also use metal music as intros for their fighters. I think it's because it's such an aggressive music genre, it fits the theme.

@DoctorEldritch I don't usually watch sports. I prefer to do something else in that time. Except when it's about kendo, then I like to cheer on the people I know. Sometimes I also watch videos from the artistic sports, such as figure skating.

@DracoTarot I am not surprised that metal music is used in UFC tournaments, but it was unexpected for me to discover it is used in figure skating as well, I thought it may be too aggressive and fast-paced for that, unlike UFC. And even the one that I posted above is a "metal ballad", so milder metal music. But maybe there are less-known examples of figure skating that use it. I have not seen it used in the Olympics or other international competitions, but maybe smaller events or private enthusiasts use it more.

Do you watch both Winter and Summer Olympics, or have a preference towards one of the two?

@Saka Ah, so it is more of a personal connection, watching sports because people that you know personally compete there? I want to say it is a good attitude, but if I may, a question: would you watch a kendo tournament if it had no one you knew competing?

@DoctorEldritch I still have a personal connection to kendo and I did watch at least some fights from tournaments on youtube. So I guess the answer is a yes.

@Saka I wonder if there are any kendo tournaments that have music? I know some of them get music after the tournament, like here:

But I wonder if there are any with music there from the start. After all, martial arts and dance are not that far from each other, even staged kendo combat with music could be a spectacle to watch...

@DoctorEldritch That's not typical, no. And I think the music would be distracting the referees in the tourney, they use sound cues to a certain extent to determine the validity of a hit.

@DoctorEldritch Metallica's Nothing Else Matters is so popular many people use the song for various events. I would think it's the most widely used song from a metal band.

    Another example is ballroom dancing.

I watch Winter and Summer Olympics. Both are entertaining.

That's true. But it is critical for the official tournament, I wonder if anyone tried to make theatrical not-real combat with music. I know Aikido master Harald Ross made a video where he and his sparring partner Stefan mixed aikido and Tango moves with music to show how well these two move sets go together. Here is a video, not the best quality, but it is the best I could find:

That's a rather rewarding idea, I think, and I wonder why it is not done more often. Maybe enthusiasts in your dojo could be inspired?
