    Hello Legion Gamers!

The month of Sci-fi and Fantasy started, and today, May 3rd, is a Paranormal day! We already started talking about all sorts of games that have this element.

But there is more to be said, as many series and films tap into this element too. From the most famous classic examples like Supernatural or X-Files to more recent and varied series and films, there is something for everyone.

I, for one, am reminded of a stop-motion cartoon from over 10 years ago called ParaNorman:

May not be the best example out there, but stop-motion animation is a rare breed, almost a dying art these days. So much so that I was very happy when Guillermo del Toro made stop-motion Pinocchio not that long ago. So I thought I'd mention ParaNorman here.

This is as far as cartoons are concerned. But Guillermo del Toro deserves another mention for his recent series anthology called The Cabinet of Curiosities. It showcases all sorts of paranormal phenomena from different authors:

These would be my top choices at this time. But there are many many others. Got any of your own?

@DoctorEldritch One of my faves is Pan's Labyrinth. It was overall a freaky and horrific movie.

Another would be Poltergeist, 1982 original. I didn't really like the remakes.

@DracoTarot Somehow, the originals are always better, the power of nostalgia is not to be underestimated. I liked Pan's Labyrinth and it was freaky in a good way, though it by no means is a tale for the kids. It reminded me of Grimm fairytales in their original form before they were appropriated for children. With gorish details and all.

@DoctorEldritch I agree! Some Movies and even series do not deserve a remake. Pan's Labyrinth is definitely not for kids. I do remember Grimm's fairytales. It was ok but I expected more.

Paranormal Activity and Insidious also performed well in the Paranormal and fantasy categories. I see they are busy with another Insidious which will be released mid-October this year.

@DracoTarot Grimm's fairytales I meant not as a game by American McGee, but as actual fairytales by Grimm brothers. Not sure what you meant when you said you expected more. If the game, then I agree, it had the same simple mechanic over and over again.

Paranormal Activity and Insidious are good enough, but a bit too on the horror side for me. The thriller is as high as I go with these. Though that being said, I like it when the paranormal is sharing the spotlight with character stories. For example, I quite liked the first season of Terror, I think I mentioned it before:

@DoctorEldritch I was thinking about the game and Brothers Grimm the series when I mentioned I expected more. It's one of those days 😂

The Terror was a great series too. There are many to mention and it's a pity they never continued with more episodes.

Supernatural is so popular and has so many seasons already. I do not watch it anymore. Became bored with the repetitive nature of the show. Feels like watching a soapy these days.

@DracoTarot I think Terror was meant to be an anthology, a bit like American Horror Story when it first started. Terror is based on a book, and so is the second season set in a concentration camp, but truth be told, I liked the story in the second season less, it had some plot holes and lack of logic. It is a pity indeed that they did not get another shot at the series, but I can sort of see why.

I think Supernatural has finally ended not that long ago. And I agree that they overplayed it quite a bit, and the ending was, well...I did not like it. But I generally do not like it when series drag on for many seasons like that. It works for sitcoms, but for series like Supernatural, it's a bit tiresome.

I like the trend in recent years where writers have an idea for a complete story spread across several seasons, and they stick to it. Sure, it can backfire as it did with 1899, particularly recently, but still, it is better than making a season and then trying to quickly come up with more plotlines if it is popular to keep filming until it isn't.

@DoctorEldritch Maybe in the future Terror would feature again. I didn't even realize Supernatural ended. I stopped watching almost 2 years back. Maybe I must watch the rest just to see how things came to a conclusion.

Game of Thrones on the other hand if I can mention a series that is more fantasy based worked out well at least there was a story. The ending could have been better. The plots were well put together and not repetitive, unlike Supernatural.

@DracoTarot Game of Thrones is based on a book series, but the books are not over yet. Because of that, the producers ran out of book material in the middle of the series and had to come up with an ending. Many people did not like how it ended, myself included, it was cliched to an unhealthy degree, I feel.

So many are waiting for the book series to end to read the "proper" ending. Whenever that will be, George R. R. Martin is taking his time with it. Though, there is also this:

@DoctorEldritch The ending was really anti-climatic. I hope he doesn't rush things. The books must be a proper read and the series a captivating watch.

I just hope he finishes before the world ends. I won't be whole if I missed the proper end to the story.
