What game remake would you be excited to play?

If some old games could get a really good remake, giving the game a new life, what would you play? It's possible to bring up to the discussions games that did get a remake, but an underwhelming one. An idea remake would be somewhat faithful to the original (I am not opposed to changes if they are sensible), improving on the parts of the game that didn't work well in the original and perhaps even expanding the world. Since we'd be talking about imaginary products, anything is possible!

I think I would like to play The Lord of the Rings games from early 2000s. Unfortunately, as far as I know, they are abandonware. The licensing rights expired. But if it were possible, it would be really cool to play them again, with modern graphics.

@Saka I was eagerly waiting for a remake of Skyrim. I see it's finally happening and the game is going to run on the Unreal 5 engine. I see they mention online the game will be finished in 2025.

I can't wait to see the addons and upgrades Skyrim will offer.

Another interesting remake would be Duke Nukem. The last game was a total disaster but I think it would never happen in the future.

@DracoTarot Duke Nukem would be a good idea indeed, but I really doubt they will, this license is totally dead unfortunately because of what became of "Forever" and to be honest can you imagine the scandal for such a game in our days ?

@DracoTarot You can already have a much better experience with Skyrim than the vanilla game if you use mods. Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE) goes a long way. There are 8K textures, animation fixes, gameplay improvements, additional questlines... almost anything. The only issues are that the engine is showing its limitations, so the performance can be so so and the game just likes to crash every now and then.

@GoLLuM13 Yea I can imagine how people would react to another Duke Nukem. Things changed a lot the past few years and some would take offense. If they tune down Duke a bit it may work.

Like you mentioned another game wouldn't see the light. I really enjoyed playing the the old ones. Don't know what they tried to accomplish with "Forever."

@Saka The engine really does have its limitations and I've experienced a few crashes of my own. The add-ons and additional content are great but I was never able to really play Skyrim properly after using mods. I had in-game crashes, memory dumps and problems with saving my progress.

Got a bit frustrated after losing character saves and I had to start over again., so I stopped playing.

They mention the 2025 release will have AI of some sort. Sounds interesting and a bit weird at the same time.

@DracoTarot I've actually had pretty successful playthroughs with a lot of mods. The 64 bit Special Edition is much less moody and had far fewer random crashes for me. They still can happen, some mods just don't work well with each other and even without any mods installed the game likes to trip over its own feet. The quicksave key is my friend when playing that game.

Here's an example of what modded Skyrim can look like these days:

The engine using in Skyrim is the same as the one in Morrowind... from 2002. All Bethesda games using that one are plagued with the same issues, for example Fallout 4. Hopefully the remake will be very different in terms of stability, but I wonder how will be the customization.

Regarding AI, there are games who either had or still have it. It can be very frustrating to have too smart enemy NPCs; I recall from a dev stream a conversation about making the enemies more stupid because of the amount of complaints from players. It might have been Guild Wars 2, but don't quote me on it. It was a long time ago.

@Saka I think most of my issues playing Skyrim was hardware related. I had an Nvidia 1050ti graphics card and a pc still running on DDR 3 ram. While my PC specs met the requirements Skyrim wouldn't run properly.

I used quicksave a lot and noticed only at a certain point in the game and depending on where I'm on the map the game doesn't really save. When I quit the saved file seemed to disappear. It didn't happen all the time and only at certain periods of gameplay.

When enemies are too smart it can be frustrating, especially if you upgraded a character and you lose gear or your skill tree drops when defeated. One of those games was Dantes Inferno.

I think I must download the 64-bit Special Edition and give it a go. The mods look great in the video.

Maybe my copy of Skyrim is riddled with bugs and it's time to send it to the recycle bin.

@DracoTarot Hm, that's odd. I did my original playthrough on Skyrim (vanilla) on a laptop with a dual core Sandy Bridge i5 and 540M graphics. Definitely not a powerhouse.

I started playing the game with mods (still with Oldrim, SE didn't come out until 2016) with i5 4570, 1600 DDR3 RAM and R9 280X graphics. 1050Ti seems actually slightly faster than my old card. Maybe there was something faulty with either the hardware or software. I have never encountered vanishing save files in that game. I did with other games though when my RAM was failing, that was frustrating to troubleshoot.

Having a clean install for starting a new gameplay never hurts anyway!

@Saka I dunno why my PC had an issue with Skyrim. I think it was both a hardware and software issue or a dodgy game file.

I'm going to download Skyrim again on my new setup and see how things pan out.
