    Hello everyone!

Just a few days ago I finally submitted my entry to the best game character discussion, my choice being Guybrush Threepwood, Mighty Pirate from the Lucasfilm Games. And by sheer coincidence, I now learned that a new Monkey Island game is coming in 2022!

This franchise may be known to more experienced gamers here as one of the best examples of point-and-click adventures from a bygone golden era of quests. Indeed, the last time we got to see some adventures of Guybrush was over 10 years ago, back when Telltale Games made their episodic 5-part adventure. So good news for those who missed the adventures of the mighty pirate, as (same as Psychonauts) the franchise is making a decade-overdue comeback with an appropriate title Return to Monkey Island!

And if all goes well, it will be well worth the wait. The game is made by Ron Gilbert, the driving force behind the original games (the first of which came out in 1990). But, as a fan of the series, I am concerned that the game will pick up where the second game, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, has ended. And while it is true that the third game, The Curse of Monkey Island, did not really follow up on the ending of MI2 and moved into a separate adventure, this would still mean that Guybrush and Elane will not be married in the new game. 😥

Not to mention that The Curse of Monkey Island is the game that I (personally) think is the best in the series and, of course, it is the one with a very distinct visual style that I really appreciated.

The 2022 game, it seems, is stylistically closer to the first 2 games. But my fan grumbling aside, it is still very exciting news for point-and-click quest lovers everywhere! And if you like quests like that but, for some reason, have not tried the franchise yet, now is the good time to do it. And it is easier now, as 2 first games got a remastered makeover back in 2009.

But if you already know and love Guybrush Threepwood, well then, the wait is almost over!
Actually, who else will be waiting for this game?

    This is interesting :)

I just loved playing the curse of monkey island back when it was release. The humor both in the narrative and the puzzles are just great as i recall them.

I didn't play the first or second game though so i don't know what i missed by skipping those.

@Klumpen I played both the first and second games when they made a remake of those back in 2009/2010. I still think that The Curse of Monkey Island is the best game of the series, and I loved the art there, but the first 2 games were decent too.

They had the style and jokes, but the biggest issue with them was that they were limited by the technologies of their time. The first 2 games were from 1990 and 1991, and the third one, The Curse of Monkey Island, was released 6 years later, in 1997, when the technology became more advanced.

But if you have not played them, it may be a good time to do so, because it seems that the Return to Monkey Island will pick up where the second game left off.

I was just 7 years old in 1990 and not a native english speaker so i'm a bit excused there :D

I remember vaguely that i might have played indiana jones and kings quest at the time which were somewhat similar. But it was done with a dictionary by my side and only the most basic knowledge of english so i probably didn't get very far.

I might pick up the old monkey island games just for fun now though :)

@Klumpen I only played them a few years ago (game 1 and 2, I mean), some time after they made remakes for those with new and improved graphics and mechanics (they even invited Dominic Armato to record all the lines again). So now it is more convenient to do so.

If you do decide to give them a go (I liked them), then those remakes are what I'd go for. And as a bonus, they'd brush up your knowledge and bring you up to speed to where the next game will continue from.

The Curse of Monkey Island I played in 1997, though. I am not a native English speaker myself, but that game was translated. Interestingly, that was the worst (and I do mean THE WORST) game translation I have ever come across, ever. Made such an impression on me that I got motivated to learn English extra diligently so as not to suffer through something like that again. Still loved the game, though (goes to show how good it is).
