The controversy around Assassin's Creed Shadows never ends, and this time it's because of watermelon! 🍉😅
One of the major Japanese accounts criticized Ubisoft after noticing that the protagonist, Yasuke, slices a watermelon with his sword 🗡.

But the issue isn’t with the scene itself—the criticisms focused on two points:

🔴 Seasonal inaccuracy: Watermelons grow in summer, yet the game world is filled with Japan’s iconic cherry blossoms 🌸, which bloom in spring. This suggests a lack of attention to seasonal representation.

🔴 The second mistake is historical: Watermelons didn’t arrive in Japan until the Edo period (1603–1868), while the game is set in 1579

Do you think these criticisms are exaggerated this time, or is historical accuracy something that shouldn’t be overlooked? 🤔

All of these things are a sign that the people making the game are simply not competent. We have seen the producer of Creed say that for half of the people on the team, this was the first game they made. That's a red flag in so many ways. First of all, that's an incredible churn, showing an unstable company that is losing tons of employees and hiring lots of new ones.

Secondly, even if newbies have the talent, they will lack the experience to perform at a high level. They'll make mistakes and since there are so many newbies, very many mistakes will be made.

Thirdly, mentoring these people well is almost impossible with such a large number of inexperienced people. The more experienced developers are going to be overwhelmed and simply can't mentor these people as much as needed.

And there is also the issue that they seem to be hiring based on other factors than competence. Even if you hire those with the best CV/interview, you will make mistakes and hire those without enough talent, but that is going to be a lot more if other factors are weighed heavily. And with such a large number of newbies, there's going to be a lot of people who are simply not up to par. That also causes a big strain on the team.

Anyway, I would suggest not pre-ordering this, because the chance that it is good seems very small.

Been a while since I saw positive news of anything Ubisoft. This doesn't seem like a huge issue in itself, but kinda as Aapje wrote, they haven't exactly been making the best decisions in recent years otherwise either.

There are so many games out there claiming to be historically accurate & still being far from reality. The AC stories at least tried to be as accurate as possible. They've made some mistakes as well in the past also, but these games where still far more historicaly realistic than most of the games out there. With the newer releases i don't have much experience, but that was the case in the past.
