Games that grew from Tabletops!

    Hello Legion Gamers!

As we reached the middle of Geek Month, I thought it was a nice time to talk a bit about tabletop games that managed to break into the game world.

The examples are numerous: many RPGs and tactical games "grew from" the tabletop counterparts, the most famous example this year would probably be Baldur's Gate 3, which is based heavily on D&D.

Playing on the same RPG field, there is the World of Darkness with their Vampire: The Masquerade game series, the second part of which seems to be stuck in dev hell and was postponed again:

Luckily, this is not the only game based on that universe, there are more textual adventures like Swansong, and some of you may remember how we played Bloodhunt last Halloween ( @j7schultz, remember that?)

These two come from more classic D&D-esque adventures. But many tactical games and even shooters also take root in tabletop versions. Warhammer 40K is a good, but certainly not only, example of this, with both Rogue Trader:

    And Space Marine 2:

    coming out soon (hopefully).

And sometimes games even take a roundabout way. For example, The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet of Chaos is a tactical game based on an audio play created by French author John Lang ( @GoLLuM13 maybe you heard of it or even just it?) which itself started as a parody of heroic fantasy role-playing games:

With such an abundance of games like that, the question has to be asked: how do you feel about them? Personally, I enjoy that they exist, but approach them cautiously, as having a tabletop "parent" can be a blessing as much as a curse for the game. On one hand, there is readily available lore, history and universe (and fanbase) to tap into, but that limits dev creativity somewhat, not to mention that they need to be careful with existing lore.

But then again, if you're a fan of some tabletop universe, then judging devs about how well they made a game in that universe can be part of the fun 😅

Are you a fan of any tabletop universe or know a good tabletop-turn-video game?

@DoctorEldritch I heard about "The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet of Chaos" but not "John Lang" 👀

Does Monopoly the video game count ? I played so much that game the physical game when I was a kid, with my brother and our neighbors, and now both the physical game and the video game with my niece 👀

@DoctorEldritch - Of course I remember. And I think we should play it again...

I want to say that it does. It is different from the tabletops I mentioned in a way that it usually transfers the mechanic into video game format without any changes, but it counts! I used to play it as a kid, too. Am actually looking for a decent video game version right now, there are many, but I find most of them lacking something...

So that you could bite @GoLLuM13 back for killing you in Dead by Daylight? 😅

    @DoctorEldritch I was there with you 😁

I remember playing with Jackie some rounds, and I was around protecting her, while she was hiding 😜

@GoLLuM13 You are just good at what the game throws at you. If it says "protect your hiding comrade", then that's what you do. And if it says "Pin your victim on a hook", then you're just as good at doing that. 😅

@DoctorEldritch I don't know if I'm good at it, the game didn't ask me to protect her, but I did it anyway 😜

@GoLLuM13 I'd say it is one of the things you do when you're on the same team, but you're right, everyone has their own playstyle. In multiplayer, I usually go for a support role, healer or some such, but there are those who like and are good in other roles.

@DoctorEldritch Yes I always go for the machine gun and/or the machete 😜 usually I protect my teammates, especially when I know them, but if I don't, and they don't have the team play spirit, I use them as baits 😂 we should never waste any resource 😂
